Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, helps many patients feel more relaxed during a procedure. You are awake and can answer questions but remain in a comfortable, twilight zone.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation comes in a pill that helps you to relax. You are still awake and can talk to the dentist but are comfortable. This is a good choice for many overly anxious people.

IV Sedation

IV sedation involves a needle injection and is one of the stronger forms of sedation. It isn't used as much as the others but can be helpful during more complex procedures.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is not typically used for dental procedures but could be an option in extreme situations.

Welcome to Taunton Village Dental

Dental Sedation in Oshawa, ON

Going to the dentist is tougher for some people. Both children and adults can have a high level of anxiety, especially if they are autistic, have special needs, or have another chronic health problem like Alzheimer's. There are reasons why some people should consider sedation dentistry including those who:

  • Had a bad experience
  • Are afraid of needles or dental tools.
  • Have a bad gag reflex.
  • Have a complicated dental case requiring extreme procedures.
  • Feel their teeth are too far gone for traditional treatment.
  • Evaluating and working with jaw growth that can affect facial symmetry.

Learn about

Using Sedation Therapy

Sedation therapy isn't always used at the dental office. It's reserved for those who need it to get through the dental procedure. The type of sedation used depends on many factors like your age, health condition, and type of anxiety.

The dental staff will first ask you about your anxiety level and the type of sedation you would prefer. They will also ask you about all your health conditions, present and past, to ensure sedation is safe for you.

Be sure to ask your dentist about this option when you go for your first visit. The staff will be happy to go over your options.

Local Anesthesia

Sedation therapy won't eliminate the need for local anesthesia. The local anesthesia, administered by a needle, will numb the area where the dentist will be working. This ensures you feel no pain.

Topical Anesthesia

Hygienists and dentists will use a topical numbing medicine before injection of the local anesthesia into the gum. The topical anesthetic ensures you don't feel the needle injection.

Sedation When Numbing Fails

Some patients don't have anxiety about dentists but, for some reason, all the local numbing medication doesn't work well. Sedation is a solution in that case because it allows you to be comfortable while the dentist continues the procedure.

Children and Sedation

Children as young as 5 years old can have nitrous oxide, depending on weight and health. It can make them sleepy, which may take some time to wear off but provides enormous pain relief.

Oral Sedation

Assuming the child is healthy, some types of oral sedation can be given to children as young as 2 years old. However, most dentists will use nitrous oxide instead for most patients who are older.

IV Sedation

Children over 16 years old are candidates for IV sedation, although the dentist may use it for younger patients depending on the situation and their health.

Disqualifying Factors

Sedation therapy for dental patients isn't recommended for those with a history of allergies or chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, or high blood pressure.
